Girl student ‘sexually harassed’ in Sambalpur school; police pick up teacher

A girl student of an English medium school in Sambalpur district was allegedly sexually harassed by a teacher of the same school, informed the district Sub Collector on Thursday.

An FIR in this connection was registered at Bareipali police station on the basis of the allegations of the girl student and the school principal.

Following the complaint, Police Inspectors of Khetrajpur and Bareipali police stations and the Sub-Collector visited the school on Thursday and spoke to the victim and school authorities.

“There is a complaint of sexual harassment in this school. So we have come here to enquire about the matter. I have spoken to the complainant and legal action will be taken against the accused as per the due procedure,” said Sub-Collector Puspanjali Panda.

“The girl student came forward with the complaint, which is commendable. Exemplary action will be taken against the teacher if he is proven guilty in court,” she added.

The police picked up the accused teacher on Thursday for questioning.

Asked about the allegations, School Principal Prashant Kumar Sarangi said, “Action will be taken as per the law.”
