In a tragic incident, a scientist of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) drowned while bathing in a pond at his native village Jharapali under Ambabhona block in Bargarh district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Nihar Ranjan Pradhan. He was working for the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center.

As per reports, the 27-year-old scientist had come to his native village last Saturday on a 15-day leave. He went to the village pond to take a bath on Monday noon. However, he slipped while bathing and went deep into the water as he didn’t know how to swim.

Some of the villagers rushed to his rescue and took him to the nearby hospital immediately. However, the doctors declared him brought dead.

Police have registered a case in this connection and sent the body for post-mortem.

A pall of gloom descended in the area following the death of the young scientist.

“Nihar was the pride of our area. He was a very modest person. His untimely death is an irreparable loss for the country and the area,” said Jharapali Sarpanch Gyana Ranjan Bhoi.
