Customers and employees at the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) main office in Dhenkanal had a narrow escape when the rifle of a security guard accompanying a cash van misfired on Thursday afternoon.

As per reports, more than 30 employees and some customers were present at the office when the mishap occurred. Police said no one was hurt in the incident as the solitary bullet misfired from the rifle hit the ceiling of the office building causing minor damages to the exteriors.

Sources said that the mishap occurred when the security guard, who was escorting a cash van belonging to cash management firm CMS, visited the LIC office to pick up cash which was to be deposited at the Axis bank.  The rifle he was carrying accidentally fired after it fell off his hand.

“I was carrying the rifle into the office premise. While I was trying to place the gun in the last shelf of a rack, it accidentally slipped from my hand and fell on the floor,” said security guard Kumud Chandra Sahu who the licensed rifle belonged.

Narrating the sequence further Sahu added, “On hitting the hard surface, the rifle somehow went off as bullet got dislodged.”
When asked if the trigger of the rifle was locked, Sahu said, “Although it was locked, the thin lock lever could have broken after hitting the hard surface causing the misfire.”

On hearing about the incident, the Dhenkanal Town police immediately rushed to the LIC office and have started investigating into the matter, said sources.
