Somatirtha Purohit

If everything goes as planned, the historic pilgrim town Puri may get a new name as ‘Sri Jagannath Puri’ or ‘Sri Jagannath Dham Puri’. Yes, you heard it right.

A proposal for this momentous decision was placed for discussion during the meeting of Sri Jagannath Temple Administration on Tuesday.
Members of the temple managing committee put before the recommendations of several religious institutions for rechristening the name of the town in the name of Lord Jagannath.

The proposal was accepted by Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deba who chaired the managing committee meeting in presence of the shrine Chief Administrator Krishan Kumar. Both are stated to have assured the members of the managing committee to take due steps in this regard as per the law.

“We have given our suggestions and names for Puri and Gajapati Maharaj has welcomed the decision. They will inform Odisha Revenue Department and legal process will be followed accordingly,” said Ashok Mohapatra, SJTA Member.

Puri District Magistrate Samarth Verma assured that the matter will be raised at the high level for thorough discussions so that an appropriate decision can be taken.

“Every members have put out their suggestions and decision will be taken soon,” he added.

“Renaming of Puri will send a good message to the world and will glorify our history. I will be fortunate and pleased if Puri will be renamed in my lifetime”, said Jagannath Sena Convenor Priyadarshan Patnaik.

The town is famous all over the world by several names since the ancient times like Shreekshetra, Nilachal Kshetra, Niladei Vihar Kshetra and Purushottam Kshetra to name a few.
