These four-legged animals are often perceived as status symbol. That’s why many people go for buying thoroughbred puppies to show off without any knowledge of the breed’s dietary and upkeep requirements.  After a certain period of enjoying their company, human beings never hesitate to dump the animals leaving them to die without food.

Of late, the desire to own foreign-origin dogs is leading to uncontrolled breeding. And in the absence of proper knowledge on raising these dogs, they end up being abandoned on the streets. A similar case has surfaced in Cuttack.

A youth identified as Tanmay Mallick has rescued a German Shepherd who was being abandoned by its owner.  Other stray dogs were attacking the foreign breed when Tanmay saved the latter and took care of it. The dog has become so sick due to lack of food. And it was crying like anything. It seemed as if the animal was looking for its owner desperately.

Acting on a tip-off, People for Animal members rushed to the spot and provided treatment to the animal.

Tanmay said, “I was on my way to Athagarh in the early morning when I spotted this foreign breed dog. As I was getting late, I left for my destination without enquiring about the matter. When I returned after three hours on the same route, I spotted the animal again at the same place. Stray dogs were about to attack it. I dared to go near it and was surprised to see tears in its eyes.”

People for Animal member Soumya Mohanty said, “People raise them inside the walls and never make these animals learn the survival skills. If you cannot keep them, you can poison them instead of abandoning them. In such cases, stray dogs bite them to death. When our father or grandparents become old, are we dumping them? These animals have also heart. When we saw this German Shepherd, it was crying like a human being. It should not be done.”
