When everything is going on as planned, it is easier to forget that many people out there are going through bad times. When it comes to underprivileged children the situation is very dim and that is where UNICEF steps in. The international organization has been working to protect, aid, advocate as well and provide resources to children who are lacking for the last 75 years.

From fulfilling the need for food shortage to the lack of sanitation facilities or water supplies UNICEF has been trying its best to help out children who do not enjoy such facilities. Apart from that the organization also provides nutrition , medical care, and educational opportunities to those who are underprivileged or at risk of losing life.

Every year UNICEF Day for Change is celebrated on December 11 to raise awareness about such needs so that this awareness leads to a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

History and significance of UNICEF Day for Change

Originally UNICEF was started by the United Nations as a temporary agency after World War II. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was started initially to provide emergency care for a limited period. But within a decade those supervising the working of UNICEF realised that the group was important to advocate and assist children with nutrition, health, safe water, education, sanitation, and other rudimentary needs.

That is why in 1957 the name was changed to the United Nations Children’s Fund however, the acronym UNICEF continues to be used.

How does UNICEF help?

UNICEF does multiple tasks under its canopy. From preparing for disaster, and disease prevention to running vaccination programs, the international organisation is all out there always where the children group needs any assistance, resources, or aid. The largest warehouse of UNICEF is in Copenhagen and is stocked with all the much-important disaster relief supplies and the team is always on its toes to send these supplies at any point across the world within 2 to 4 days.

UNICEF runs different awareness programs and uses a plethora of opportunities to make people aware of the needs of children across the globe. And UNICEF Day for Change is one such important opportunity through which the organisation tries to reach as many people as possible.
