Rajkumar Hirani has a legacy of making films that have always been super hits. Importantly, his movies have never been the regular masala type or action flicks that will bring a lot of moolah. Rather his films are mostly based on socio-economic topics that have a message and hint at breaking age-old traditions and beliefs and introducing new changes into society for its betterment.
On his birthday today, know some lesser-known facts about Rajkumar Hirani who has given record-breaking hits like Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Sanju, 3 Idiots, and PK. Next, he will be working with Shah Rukh Khan in Dunki scheduled to release this December.

Born in Nagpur to father with typing institute
Raju Hirani was born in Nagpur. His father Suresh ran a typing institute and since computers had made an entry the response to the institute started dying. Instead of taking the business forward Raju aimed at becoming an actor and always tried to act charades in front of the mirror. Since he was also not good at studies his father decided to shoot his portfolio.
Raju’s father forced him to apply for FTII
Even though his father had limited resources he enrolled his son into an acting class in Mumbai. Being from a small town Raju could not settle in Mumbai and returned to Nagpur in just 3 days. However, his father did not give up and forced him to apply for FTII in Pune. Since there were too many applications entries for the acting course were closed. So instead Raju applied for an editing course and his brilliance in editing got him a scholarship.
Despite an editing degree Raj struggled to make a mark
Even after completing a 3-year editing course, Rajkumar Hirani failed to get a good job and had to borrow money from his father. Finally, he decided to return to Nagpur and started off as an advertisement assistant in a low-paying agency.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s entry made a difference
It was Vidhu Vinod Chopra who offered him a chance to direct Munnabhai MBBS which turned out to be a blockbuster and now the rest is history. Hirani has worked with Chopra for more than two decades now and all his movies have been big hits.
His big personal dream could not be fulfilled
He always dreamt of bringing his father Suresh Hirani to Mumbai home but it could not become possible as his father died before then. Over the years Rajkumar Hirani has been one of the most successful directors in India but equally elusive as he never comes in front of the camera to promote himself or his movies.
