A minor girl at Baringia village under Khaira police limits in Balasore district was allegedly burnt alive by a youth on Sunday. The accused has been identified as Dayanidhi Jena.

The exact reason behind the accused setting the minor girl, who was studying in standard 8, on fire is still unclear. As per the initial reports, the minor girl was allegedly dragged by the accused when she was going to buy a pencil.

On hearing the screams, some villagers rushed to the spot and detained the accused. Some hair and lighter were recovered from the spot.

“I heard noise and when I rushed to the spot found the girl lying on the ground. There was smell of kerosene all over the spot. The villagers detained the youth and later called the police,” said Bidyadhar Giri, a villager

As per reports, the accused Dayanidhi is married and he allegedly poured kerosene and set the minor girl on fire. Sources said that the deceased girl earlier used to visit the house of the accused for taking tuition from his wife. However, the minor girl’s parents had stopped sending her to the tuition following some dispute with the accused and his wife.

The deceased girl’s mother said, “My daughter was studying at home and asked me money to buy pencil. Later, the accused intercepted her and killed her by setting her on fire.”

Tilotma Jena, wife of the accused said, “The girl was not coming to our house for the last one month. I don’t know why my husband killed her. I want exemplary punishment for him. I was giving tuition when the incident occurred.”

Till the last report came in, police officials had reached the spot and started an investigation in connection with the incident.
