Jajpur police have arrested the prime accused, involved in the alleged rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl in February this year, from Bengaluru.

The accused, Subrat Behera, was absconding and has been caught by police after being on the run for almost 65 days.

It is pertinent to mention here that police had initially registered an unnatural death case after body of the minor girl with her throat silt was found on February 17. The body of the victim was recovered from the banks of river  Brahmani under Bari police limits.

Senior police officials said that the subsequently a murder case was registered based on the autopsy report. Subsequently, the family members of the victim had sought intervention of Jajpur Collector for an impartial probe into the incident.

Jajpur Additional SP, Narayan Barik said, “After we learnt that it was a murder case, we had intensified our probe. As there were no initial clues, we zeroed in on the identity of the accused who has confessed to his crime.”

On the day of incident on February 17, the girl had gone to the river to wash utensils. On finding the girl alone, the accused raped her. 
“The accused had murdered the girl by silting her throat out of fear that she might expose him.,” Barik added.
