The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested Shikhar Jena, the prime accused in the group attack on the husband and family members of a BJP corporator candidate outside the Laxmisagar police station in Bhubaneswar on March 11.

Jena is the brother of a former corporator from Ward no 32 of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Police said Jena has been booked under Arms Act and Section 307 of IPC. Subsequent to his arrest, Jena was produced in a court for remand.

Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had staged a demonstration in front of Laxmisagar police station on Monday demanding the arrest of Jena.

“A case was registered at the Laxmisagar police station in connection with the group clash on the basis of a report prepared by the inspector-in-charge. During investigation, the involvement of Shikhar Jena surfaced. Therefore, he has been put under arrest and produced in a court,” informed Additional DCP of Bhubaneswar, Prakash Pal.

When asked about the application of Arms Act against the accused, Pal said, “In a viral video, Jena was seen holding a gun and firing in the air. The legal act has been applied against him for further investigation.”

Meanwhile, local residents staged a demonstration outside the Laxmisagar police station demanding the release of Jena.
Notably, on March 11, the brother, brother-in-law and husband of a BJP female corporator candidate were attacked right in front of the Laxmisagar police station.

Subsequently, the police had detained Rakesh Jena, brother of the said BJP corporator candidate who had allegedly been attacked by Jena. Alleging partisan handling of the case by the police, BJP activists and leaders had staged a demonstration at the police station on Monday.

They had demanded action against Shikhar Jena and the immediate release of Rakesh.

BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan, who was leading the agitation, had alleged that Shikhar Jena, Shreedhar Jena and Dillip Jena had attacked Rakesh and two others. “Instead of taking action against the attackers, the police have detained Rakesh who is the victim,” Pradhan had alleged.
