Paava Kadhaigal Opens to a Heartwarming Response and Positive Reviews

Paava Kadhaigal springs a surprise on the Tamil audience with its four stories directed by some of the eminent names in the South Indian movie world. The four sin stories -Thangam (Sudha Kongara Prasad), Oor Iravu (Vetri Maaran), Vaanmagal (Gautham Vasudev Menon), and Love Panna Uttranum (Vignesh Shivan) deal with pride, honor, and complex relationships.

The stellar star cast of Paava Kadhaigal includes Kalidas Jayaram, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, Bhavani Sre, Gautham Menon, Simran, Anjali, Kalki Koechlin, Prakash Raj, Sai Pallavi, Jaffer Sadiq.

Importantly most of these stories challenge the patriarchal Indian society that over the years have accepted violence against women as a normal norm. While the quartet does succeed in putting forth all the flaws in our culture it fails when it comes to offering a solution whether it is related to violence against women or taking a stand against injustice.

Paava Kadhaigal -Stories in  Nutshell

Thangam is a tale about a Muslim transperson Sathaar played by Kalidas Jayaram. His sister Sahira (Bhavani Sre) and friend Thangam (Shanthanu Bhagyaraj) are in love and want to marry. But Sathaar's attempts to get them married leads to the outburst against him.

Vetri Maaran's Oor Iravu is the best of all the four movies when it comes to narration and even the story. It is all about how a father (Prakash Raj) can be atrocious towards his daughter (Sai Pallavi) just to follow certain beliefs.

Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vaanmagal is the struggle of a family in a village after their little girl Ponnuthaayi is raped. Her mother Mathi (Simran) has certain backward beliefs that make the life of this little girl hell.

And the last story of this quartet is Love Panna Uttranum by Vignesh Shivan which is a tale of twins Aadhilakshmi and Jyothilakshmi (both played by Anjali). The real trouble starts when they reveal to their father their love for each other. Although the storyline is unique it fails to come up with a logical conclusion which is quite disheartening.
