The 30-share Bombay Stock Exchange index resumed higher at 16,155.99 and hovered in a range between 16,237.41 and 16,057.53 before quoting at 16,162.57 at 1015 hours, translating into a net gain of 20.90 points, or 0.13 per cent, vis-a-vis last weekend`s close.
However, the NSE`s 50-share Nifty was down by 17.45 points, or 0.36 per cent, at 4,828.20 at 1015 hours.
The major gainers from the Sensex pack were Jaiprakash Associates (3.19 per cent), Jindal Steel (2.05 per cent), BHEL (1.70 per cent), Bharti airtel (1.15 per cent) and HDFC (0.85 per cent).
Major Asian stock markets lost at least 1 per cent last week as investors fretted about global growth prospects and awaited further developments in the euro-zone debt crisis.
