Washington: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday committed America's support for Pakistan's struggle against violent extremism as he denounced the "horrific" Taliban attack on a military-run school in Peshawar.

"By targeting students and teachers in this heinous attack, terrorists have once again shown their depravity," said Obama.

"We stand with the people of Pakistan, and reiterate the commitment of the United States to support the government of Pakistan in its efforts to combat terrorism and extremism and to promote peace and stability in the region."

In the worst attack in Pakistan in years, Taliban militants stormed Army Public School on Warsak Road and went classroom-to-classroom shooting indiscriminately.

Nearly 140 people, mostly students in the first through 10th grades, were killed in today's attack, which came as a retaliation to Pakistan military's campaign against the militants in the northern region of the country.

Obama in a statement said?the US condemns "in the strongest possible terms today's horrific attack".

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones."
