Nepal Protests
Nepal is witnessing a wave of youth-led protests that have gripped the nation in recent days. Anger has spilled onto the streets as thousands of young people demonstrate against what they see as political corruption, lack of accountability, and failures of the country’s institutions.
According to former Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Ranjit Rae, a key trigger for the unrest was the formation of a grand coalition between the two largest political parties. Rumors quickly spread that this alliance was created to shield senior leaders from ongoing corruption investigations. The move has been widely perceived by the public, especially the youth, as an attempt to protect political elites rather than serve the people.
The situation escalated when authorities arrested a popular opposition leader, seen as a symbol of hope by many young Nepalis. Rae pointed out that this arrest further deepened public distrust in the system. In a dramatic twist, protesters themselves secured his release from jail, underlining both their frustration with state institutions and their willingness to take matters into their own hands.
Commenting on the protests, Rae said, “There was this sense that nothing was happening within the existing institutions in Nepal, and these youngsters have taken the law into their own hands.”
The current unrest reflects a deep-rooted crisis of faith in Nepal’s political system. With young citizens demanding justice and accountability, the government faces its toughest challenge in restoring stability and trust.
