In an attempt to facilitate poor patients avail advanced medical technology, liver transplantation process has commenced at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCB MCH) in Cuttack. After almost a decade long wait, complex treatment process has been facilitated for the first time in the State at the SCB. The advanced treatment has begun at the special modular operation theatre at the trauma building on the hospital premises. Notably, liver transplant costs anything between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh in corporate hospitals across India. However, in what may provide big relief to the people of Odisha, the State government is planning to make it affordable at SCB hospital. As per SCB medical sources, registration of as many as three persons has already been completed for the transplant. Today, at the special modular operation theatre of the hospital, a patient is scheduled to undergo transplantation of liver donated by his wife. The complex operation process will take around 12 to 13 hours. An MOU has been signed between Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad and SCB for the liver transplantation process. A joint team of doctors from AIG and SCB will carry out the process. Odisha government had announced to start the liver transplant unit at SCB in 2013. It was announced a year after a kidney transplant unit started functioning in the hospital. A sum of Rs 22 crore was sanctioned for setting up the unit.
