With the flood situation in Odisha worsening, waterlogging & flooding in several areas of the state including Sambalpur, Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Banki were reported.
As part of its ongoing measures to combat the flood-situation, the Odisha government on Tuesday decided to open additional gates of Hirakud Dam to flush out excess floodwater entering the reservoir. As per the decision, the floodwater will now be released through 40 gates of Hirakud.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted heavy rainfall activities in several parts of Odisha starting from August 18. As per IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over north Bay of Bengal around August 19.

As inflow of floodwater into the Hirakud reservoir continues to increase, the authorities have decided to open as many as 40 gates to release excess floodwater.
