Twitter has been at loggerheads with the Indian government over the new social media rules. The government has confronted Twitter over deliberate defiance and failure to comply with the country's new IT rules, despite repeated reminders.
The social media company's website no longer displays his name, as required under Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021.
Twitter on Friday said it "stands prepared" to work with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT on safeguarding citizens' rights online, even as the panel categorically told the microblogging platform that rule of the land is supreme and not the company's policies.
Social media platform Twitter has lost its status of intermediary platform in India over non-compliance to the new intermediary guidelines.
A day after micro-blogging platform Twitter said that it has appointed a Chief Compliance Officer, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that the US-based company has failed to comply to the new intermediary guidelines.
"We are keeping the MeitY apprised of the progress at every step of the process. An interim Chief Compliance Officer has been retained and the details will be shared with the ministry directly soon."
Twitter India is stepping into the equation in the public domain after a series of recent blows, even as Twitter officials told an Indian newswire that they are hurrying and would close the loop on appointing a chief compliance officer "within a week" from June 7.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has hit back hard at Twitter's latest statement raising concerns over the 'potential threat' to freedom of speech, saying that the microblogging platform is trying to dictate its terms in India, and also wants to undermine the country's legal system.
