In a terse letter to Shinde on Thursday, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, who quit as Chief Minister on June 29, said: "You have been indulging in anti-party activities and have voluntarily given up your membership of Shiv Sena."

The oath-taking ceremony came a day after former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resigned his post in the wake of a major rebellion in the Shiv Sena legislators that led to the collapse of the 31-month-old Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

The cabinet meeting chaired by the beleaguered Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also approved the naming of upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport after farmer leader late D B Patil.

The plea argued that of late, there is a concerted pan-India effort by political parties to render the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution otiose and redundant.

Thackeray said under the present situation, "my own (Shiv Sainiks) don't want me as CM".
