The eastern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Kolkata has imposed a fine of Rs 2 crore on Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), Angul taking cognizance of the damages allegedly caused by the steel major to the ecology of Nandira River in Angul.
A bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar, Hrishikesh Roy, and C.T. Ravikumar delivered the judgment on a batch of petitions which raised the issue whether the NGT has suo motu jurisdiction.
As per NGT orders and rules, natural drains shouldn't be covered and concretised. Around natural or primary drains, a buffer zone of 50mt need to be ensured. Also, pillars or fencing have to be undertaken to demarcate
