The warship has been built at a cost of around Rs 23,000 crore and its construction propelled India into a select group of countries having capabilities to build state-of-the-art aircraft carriers.
Later, the President also visited the IAC Vikrant which is under construction at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The President was provided a first-hand brief on the progress of trials towards commissioning of the ship.
Mormugao is being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDSL). The ship incorporates several niche indigenous technologies.
The President was speaking while presenting the coveted "President's Standard to 22nd Missile Vessel Squadron", here, in the presence of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar.
"As the Indian Navy re-dedicates itself to the service of the nation on Navy Day, it renews its pledge and commitment to protect and promote national interests and serve the people of India through this small but important gesture of exhibiting the monumental national flag," said an official.
Admiral Kumar said the Indian Navy keeps track of China's forays into the Indian Ocean, saying activities of that country are watched closely.
In his career spanning nearly 39 years, he has commanded Coast Guard Ship C-01, Indian Navy Ship (INS) Nishank, missile corvette INS Kora and guided-missile destroyer INS Ranvir and aircraft carrier INS Viraat.
