The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday caught the Goods and Services Tax (GST) superintendent red-handed while accepting bribe from a contractor in Sundargarh district’s Rourkela.

Out of the Rs 1,62,712 crore GST collections for September, CGST was Rs 29,818 crore, SGST was Rs 37,657 crore, IGST was Rs 83,623 crore (including Rs 41,145 crore collected on import of goods) and cess was Rs 11,613 crore (including Rs 881 crore collected on import of goods).

As per Finance Ministry data, in 2020-21, as many as 12,596 cases of GST evasion were detected, while in 2022-23, the cases rose by 23.5 per cent to 15,562.

Addressing a press conference after the marathon eight-hours-long meeting, Sitharaman said that tax exemption has also been extended to satellite launch services provided by private parties.

This will give more power to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the anti-money laundering agency, to act against tax evasion within GSTN.

The gross GST collection in April 2023 is also an all-time high and is Rs 19,495 crore more than the previous highest collection of Rs 1,67,540 lakh crore, which was recorded in April 2022.

The raids were conducted simultaneously at five places including their residence at Ghantapada and two business entities - Maa Hingula Transport and Maa Hingula Traders.

February's GST collections were marginally higher than December 2022 collections, which were Rs 1,49,507 crore.

The government has settled Rs 38,507 crore towards CGST and Rs 32,624 crore towards SGST from IGST as regular settlement.
