In the last 24 hours, India reported 21,411 new Covid-19 cases, a decline against the 21,880 infections registered the previous day, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.
According to the State Covid dashboard, the pandemic has so far claimed a total of 9,126 lives. Proving it wrong, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD)-2020 report of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has stated a minimum of 8,711 people lost their lives to Covid-19 in the first wave itself.
In its report released on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that nearly 15 million people were killed either by the coronavirus or by its impact on overwhelmed health systems in the past two years, more than double the official death toll of 6 million. Most of the fatalities were in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.
