Rourkela: To encourage women hockey players in the state, Hockey Odisha organised one state level women hockey championship here at Biju Patnaik hockey stadium.  Sundergarh women team defeated Cuttack team to emerge as the champions of the tournament.

Several hockey players of the states have won accolades for the state at the junior and sub junior level in current year and most of the players by cementing their places in the national hockey teams. Most of the players were from from Sundergarh district.

However, the state lacked facilities for honing such talented players, rued both organisers and players. Even players have to move to other states for jobs. The players regretted the lack of efforts on the part of the government to improve proper infrastructure for the game as well as employment provisions in the state.  Lamenting the dismal state of affairs, Hockey Odisha Secretary Pratap Satpathy  said that both government and non-government sectors could help improve the conditions in the state.
