Lakhimpur: A wild tusker was found dead in Sathiyana range of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR), forest officials said today.

The carcass was recovered from under water in Suheli river, a few kilometres away from the Tiger Haven on Tuesday, they said. The tusker`s organs had been badly mutilated indicating the carcass to be several days old.

Shailesh Prasad, field director, DTR along with deputy director Ganesh Bhat and wildlife expert Dr Vijay Prakash Singh inspected the spot later and fished out the carcass from the river for postmortem examination.

Deputy director, DTR Ganesh Bhat told PTI that tusks, nails and other vital organs of the dead elephant have been found intact. "The condition of the carcass and the rough terrain ruled out any foul play. A team of veterinary doctors headed by Dr J V Singh with Dr V P Singh as independent observer had been engaged to carry out an autopsy of the carcass on camera. The viscera of the dead elephant had been preserved for further investigation by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly", he said.
