Kendrapara: Atrocities on women like molestation, rape and sexual harassment refused to die down in the state even as back to back such incidents have acted a major headache for the police. After the molestation and gang-rape cases in Bhubaneswar, it’s now Kendrapara where a woman sarpanch was allegedly molested and attacked brutally on Tuesday at Ghagara village under Nikirai police station.

Victim Banojini Parida, sarpanch of Ghagara gram panchayat, who sustained multiple injuries with her head and chest, was admitted to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted to the trauma care centre of SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack.

According to police, a group of people from the village had been threatening the sarpanch for past couple of days to include names of some influential people in Indira Awas beneficiary list. When Parida refused to do so, eight people on Tuesday entered her house forcibly and attacked the sarpanch and her mother leaving them injured.

Surprisingly even though Banojini had earlier lodged complaint with the local police over the threatening, no steps were taken against them.

“I lodged a complaint at Tikirai police station and also sent a copy of the FIR to district SP after getting threatening from the youths. Instead of initiating any action, I was rather asked to request government for special security arrangement,” Banojini alleged.

Meanwhile, irate people gheraoed the police station protesting the attack and demanded immediate arrest of the accused.

According to Nikirai police IIC a person has been nabbed in this connection and investigation is on.

“We have registered four cases on the complaints lodged by both sides”, IIC Manasi Patra said.

Notably, a 17-year-old girl from the same district was molested in a moving auto by three persons in Bhubaneswar late Sunday night and was thrown off the vehicle. The victim is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
