Weather update: Heavy to very heavy rainfall in next 24 hours

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area centred over north-west Bay of Bengal is likely to induce moderate to heavy rainfall in most places of the State in next 72 hours and very to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over several districts in the next 24 hours, the local meteorological centre said today.

The system associated with a cyclonic circulation up to 9.5 km above the mean sea level is moving southwards and likely to develop into a well-marked low pressure in 24 hours, met office sources said.

Due to its effect, there is a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Angul, Rayagada, Boudh and Kandhamal districts within the next day.

The forecast also said that a few places over the districts of Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapara, Boudh, Angul, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal and Kalahandi districts will likely receive heavy to very heavy rainfall tomorrow while some places in Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapara and Boudh might get extremely heavy rainfall.

Similarly the meteorological centre has also forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places over Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Angul on July 16.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea during the next 48 hours, the met office release said.

Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre's Director, HR Biswas said in the last 24 hours most places of Odisha have received good amount of rainfall of 25 per cent above daily average. With 65.0 mm, Hindol has recorded the highest amount of rainfall followed by Korei with 55.6 and Chandipur with 49.4 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours, Biswas said.
