Bhubaneswar: A tusker was today found dead inside the Chandaka forests at village Dashpur near Andharua on the outskirts of the capital. The carcass of the elephant bore several injury marks indicating the death of the animal likely due to fighting with other elephants in the reserved forest. The body of the elephant was lying in an agricultural land about two two kilometres from village Dashpur. Forest officials said that the exact cause of the death of the elephant could be ascertained after post-mortem.

Forest department sources said that the 65-year-old animal was the oldest among the elephant population and was roaming all alone always preferring to stay away from elephant herds. The forest officials said that the tusks of the elephant, one measuring 53 inches and another 49 inches, were intact and hence ruled out its killing by poachers. However, the exact cause of the death of the old elephant could only be established after post-mortem.
