Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed in the Tata Steel project area in Marthapur village of Jajpur district on Saturday as two groups differed on certain issues evolving out of the social benefits of the water sourcing project of the company.

Despite police intervention, members of the two groups staged demonstration at the project site and asked the company officials to resolve the matter.

Sources said, the tense situation erupted today morning after the two groups fought among themselves believing that the other group is sharing benefit the most. Two days back, though the company had agreed for eight of the proposals of the villagers before starting work on the project, the agitators asked company officials to sort out the matter.

Demands of the villagers include supply of safe drinking water, employment of villagers in various works of the Tata project and transparency in social benefits of the project with the involvement of locals.

The 12-day long mass dharna staged by Marthapur Gram Vikash Manch (MGVM) against the project was withdrawn on Wednesday after an assurance by the administration that their demands would be looked into.

Tate Steel has planned to construct the project at Marthapur to supply water to its under construction six MTPA steel plant at Kalinga Nagar in the district.
