Balasore: India on Tuesday test fired its indigenously developed first subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay from the launch pad no.3 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in the presence of top defence scientists and senior officials.

The missile was blasted off from a mobile launcher positioned in the launch pad 3 of the ITR at about 11:54 AM, defence sources said.

The surafce-to-surface missile can be launched from land, sea and air. It has an operational strike range of 1000 km and at flight and is capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads.

The six meter long ‘Nirbhay’ missile has a launch weight of about 1,500 kg. It can carry a payload of 450 kilograms and soar to a minimum of 10 km and a maximum of 50 km.

The missile ‘Nirbhay’, which has been jointly developed by Hyderabad based Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bangalore, would be inducted into the three services - Army, Navy and Air force, said sources.
