Bhubaneswar: The monsoon session of Odisha assembly started on a stormy note on Tuesday with principal opposition Congress and BJP creating pandemonium over their demand for a high court bench in western Odisha that forced the Speaker to adjourn the House twice.

Soon after passing a condolence motion mourning deaths of a former member of the House and four security forces, the Speaker proceeded to question hour. However, only after two minutes of transactions, BJP and Congress members rushed to the well holding placards and banners mentioning a permanent high court bench in western Odisha. The Speaker was forced to adjourn House till 12.30 pm. Later, similar uproarious scene prevailed soon after the House re-assembled and again it was adjourned till 3 pm.

Both the opposition parties are prepared to grill the government with a host of issues. Congress has targeted the Naveen Patnaik government over issues like social security for women and the multi-crore chit fund scam in the State while the BJP has decided to raise issues like unemployment.

According to Congress sources, the party which had earlier demanded CBI inquiry into the chit fund scam, has decided to stall the House seeking white paper on it. Similarly, BJP has prepared to grill the government over less employment opportunities. The saffron party leader Jayanarayan Mishra had earlier commented on the government’s youth police terming it as vote bank for BJD. The government instead of focusing an overall development of youths is trying to mislead them through the youth policy, he had said.

Notably, a permanent high court bench is a long standing demand of the people of western Odisha following which all party of the western pockets have decided to boycott the urban polls scheduled to be held on September 19. Lawyers Association has also called for a bandh in west part of the state and closed all government offices today demanding same.
