Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor SC Jamir along with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 144th birth anniversary on Wednesday.
 
The leaders paid floral tributes at the State Assembly. They were accompanied by Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh, Bhubaneswar MP Prasana Patsani, other ministers and various leaders of the state.
 
“We should all remember the great deeds and sacrifices of Mahatma Gandhi made for our nation”, CM Naveen Patnaik said in his message.
 
The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti across the country. It is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.
 
On the occasion, the ruling BJD has launched a statewide padayatra programme while the Congress has decided to start its drive in the current month. BJD president Naveen Patnaik kicked off the padayatra at Unit-VI.  It would end on October 11 marking the birth anniversary of Jay Prakash Narayan.
 
Similarly, Congress launched a padayatra today from Janata Maidan to Congress Bhawan to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The journey was led by PCC president Jayadev Jena. The Congress will soon start a state wide padayatra to reach people, Jena said.
