Kendrapara: A seventh class girl was set on fire by the jilted lover at Kharanasi village under Mahakalapada police station in Kendrapara district on Sunday, police said. Both of the accused are absconding and the victim was admitted to hospital, they added.
 
According to police, a man had a one sided love affair with a girl of his village who got married recently. He later proposed to the younger sister of the married girl to which she denied.
 
Being irate over the rejection of his proposal, he, along with his friend, poured kerosene before setting her on fire in a closed room. The girl sustained more than fifty per cent burn injuries and was admitted to Kendrapara district headquarters hospital. Later, she was shifted to SCB medical in Cuttack when her condition deteriorated.
 
Meanwhile, police arrested Pradip Das (20) from the port town of Paradip while the other offender Ekadashi Das is absconding.
 
Kendrapara superintendent of Police, Sarthak Sadangi said "The incident is being thoroughly investigated as the FIR lodged in this connection alleged that the victim was sexually abused." 
 
A team of police officials have rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital to record statement of the victim who is undergoing treatment. The police was waiting for the medical report and victims statement to confirm the sexual abuse angle of the crime, the SP said.
 
Expressing anguish over the incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has asked the police to take immediate steps to arrest the culprits. Patnaik also announced that the victim's medical expenses would be borne by the state government.


Meanwhile, district administration disbursed Rs 20,000 financial assistance to the victims family from chief ministers relief fund.
 
Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda visited the victim at the hospital and discussed with the attending doctors about her condition. Panda assured the family of the victim of all possible help.
