Bhubaneswar: In an effort to keep the harmful radiations emanating from X-Ray machines at bay, which tend to pose health hazards for patients, the state government on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to set up a directorate of Radiation Safety in the state.

As per the pact, the directorate would test the machines before they are installed by medical practitioners. It also mandates all the practitioners to register their installations with the directorate.

“It would also check the ill-effects of the radiation emanating from the set up, proper installation of the unit,” said an official.

Recently Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Gujarat, Chhatisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Punjab have signed pacts with the board for the set up of directorates.

The MoU aims at strengthening the regulatory control of medical diagnostic installations in the state, health officials said.
