Sambalpur: Labourers working at an under-construction over bridge near the district collector’s office had a narrow escape from death today after a guardwall fell off while being fitted to the over bridge by two cranes.

According to an eyewitness, an iron guardwall was being fitted above a pillar of the over bridge when it suddenly detached from the cranes and fell on the ground. However since there was no people near the spot, no one was injured during the incident.

“The workers fitted the slab and they were tightening the bolts when one of the wielding loosened up and the slab came crashing down. Fortunately, the employees who were standing on the over bridge for fitting the slab jumped off to save themselves when the structure fell down,” the eyewitness said.

It is suspected that the guardwall was not fitted well with the crane due to which it detached and fell on the ground.

Even as comments from the constructing firm identified as Panda Infrastructure could not be obtained, sources said the local PWD engineer will probe the incident today.
