Bhubaneswar: A minor girl student of an engineering college in Similiguda of Koraput district, who was allegedly set on fire by her classmate for turning down love proposal on May 31, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here on Monday.

As per reports, at around 12 noon on May 31, the accused went to meet the deceased at her hostel. After a few minutes of interaction, the boy allegedly poured petrol on the girl. Following this, the girl ran and locked herself inside a bathroom. But the accused burnt a piece of paper and dropped inside the bathroom that set her ablaze.

The girl was initially rushed to the Koraput district headquarters hospital in a critical condition. However, after her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the MKCG hospital in Berhampur and later to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

On June 6, the accused surrendered before police and he was then produced before the SDJM court, which sent him on a judicial custody after rejecting his bail plea.
