Malkangiri: Normal life was affected in Maoist-hit Malkangiri district today amid closure of shops and disruption in vehicular movement during a bandh called by Maoists. The bandh call was given by Andhra-Odisha Special Border Zonal Committee of CPI (Maoist) which observed a protest week from May 23 to press for their demands including halt to operation Green Hunt and release of tribals lodged in jails on charge of being Maoists.
Government and private vehicles refrained from plying to Maoist prone Kalimela, Motu, MV-79 and Padia while shops and business establishments downed their shutter. Very few vehicles plied to Chitrakonda and Balimela area whereas government vehicles from Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Visakhapatnam, G.Udaygiri and Jagdalpur to Malkangiri district headquarter returned from Jeypore of Koraput district, 110 km from here, police sources said.
In view of the bandh call police and district administration had made elaborate security arrangements in all police stations, jail, police armoury and government offices of the district. The bandh passed off peacefully with no untoward incident from any place, police said.
