Bhubaneswar/Bolangir: Hundreds of supporters turned up en masse in Bolangir on Thursday to join the indefinite hunger strike called by Lower Suktel Action Committee (LSAC) demanding immediate execution of Lower Suktel Irrigation Project. LSAC also received a shot in the arm when its voice noticeably strengthened by handful of intellectuals and several social organizations from across the district who joined the stir that entered second day today.

It may be noted that the agitation is likely to get intensified after Kantabanjhi Congress MLA Santosh Singh Saluja joins the stir on Saturday, as declared by him.

Members of the committee resumed their dharna in front of the district Collectorate after they took out a rally comprising nearly 500 bikes with placards reading to expedite the project construction work. The sloganeering agitators demanded the government to speed up process for the project, the potential lifeline of Boalngir’s agriculture.

“We’ll continue the fast-unto-death agitation till state government agrees to start project work after fulfilling all our demands including adequate compensation for the would-be displaced,” said Narendra Kumar, a member of LSAC.

“When the government claims to be pro-farmer, why it is going backtrack in compensating people,” rued Kumar.

Meanwhile the district administration has reportedly started discussion with LSAC members to find out a solution. “We can only present demands of the people before the government which will take the decision” said an official on condition of anonymity.

The committee, however to make its voice heard plans to urge the farmers across the district to join their agitation in the coming days.
