Kendrapara: In a bid to curb criminal activities and regulate traffic in Kendrapara, the district police has decided to bring the town and its surrounding areas under CCTV surveillance.

As many as 36 cameras will be installed at 12 strategic locations of Kendrapara town in order to keep a check on criminal activities. A control room will be set up near Old Motor Cycle Stand to monitor the cameras 24x7.

As per reports, the CCTV cameras will be installed at Tinimuhani, Bus Stand, Kakat Chhak, Bala Baba Chhal, Bada Haat and other spots which are the main entry and exit points of the town.

“We have planned to bring the stretch from Kendrapara town to Duhuria till Pattamundai under CCTV coverage. As a pilot project, 36 cameras will be installed at 12 strategic entry and exit points of the town. The project has been started on trial basis and the system will be soon adopted permanently,” said Kendrapara SP Niti Sekhar.

These cameras will help the police to monitor the anti-social elements and keep a watch on criminal activities in the town. Besides, the cameras will help the police in identifying youths and drunkards flouting traffic norms.

Apart from this, the police has decided to set up more than one cameras in sensitive locations of Kendrapara. The cameras will be installed before Gajalaxmi Puja, said sources.

A resident of Kendrapara, Rabi Narayan Pati said, “Kendrapara is a place which sees maximum anti-social activities on regular basis. The CCTV cameras will help the police department to keep an eye on the criminals and take stringent action.”

“The decision of the district administration and police department to install cameras in every nook and corner of the town is a welcome move. This will help in curbing crimes,” said another resident Gayadhar Dhal.

In the first phase, the CCTV cameras will be installed in Kendrapara town and later it will be expanded to Pattamundai. The move to install cameras before Gajalaxmi Puja has been lauded by intellectuals.
