Koraput: Tension ran high in Kusumpadar in the district yesterday after a couple of wild elephants sneaked into the village and damaged crops and many houses.

According to sources, people started running helter-skelter when the pachyderms entered the village in the night and smashed houses. They later went to the paddy fields around the village and destroyed the crop there.

Meanwhile, the locals demanded that the district administration should take necessary measures to drive away the herd and compensate the victims.

Very often, elephants stray into the village and create panic while destructing paddy fields and leaving people homeless, a local resident said.

“The jumbos generally stay in the hills during day time and enter the village in the evening forcing us to move to other villages for the night to save our lives,” he added.
