Rourkela: Enterprising employees of Captive Power Plant-I (CPP-I) of Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP) have made substantial savings for the plant through innovative method, besides streamlining the processes and further enhancing safety standards, RSP sources said.

The innovative method was applied to dynodrives, which are very complex equipment used to drive the coal feeding system of high pressure & medium pressure boilers of CPP-I requiring labour intensive maintenance and were proving to be ineffective in the long run.

The CPP-I employees carried out a micro analysis of operational requirements of the coal feeding and stoker drive system and followed it up with an in-house prototype study to gather required information about the effectiveness of the project in operational conditions.

Thereafter, they installed VVVF drives that have better control parameters and operational effectiveness as compared to dynodrives. A refurbished VVVF drive was introduced and is now giving superb results, the sources added.

The innovation has reduced labour intensive maintenance, use of spares and consumables, energy consumption and raised productivity. The creation of a safer work environment has been one of the major highlights of the innovation, the sources added.
