Bhubaneswar: Keeping students’ safety in view, the Odisha government has decided to close the schools and colleges in 13 districts till Monday as the low pressure triggered heavy rains continue to lash many parts of the State.

As rain water entered some schools and colleges and people are seen taking shelter in these educational institutes in many flood-hit areas, the government decided to close these institutes temporarily, School and Mass Education Secretary Usha Padhee said.

Earlier in the morning, the government said that schools in 12 districts including Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhmal, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagtsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore & Mayurbhanj will remain closed till Monday.

Later, the number of districts was increased from 12 to 13 after the collector of Jajpur district reported about the grim situation and requested for closure of educational institutes, Padhee added. The government has aimed at averting any untoward situation in educational institutes.

However, the service of the teaching staff may be required during this critical hour. As relief and rehabilitation work is on, they may be engaged in it, she clarified.
“We will assess the situation. The collectors of the concerned districts have been asked to give report about the situation after Monday and accordingly further action will be taken” Padhee maintained.

According to officials the closure is likely to be extended if condition in these areas remained grim even after Monday.
