Dhenkanal: A 16-year-old girl went missing and eight rescued in the Brahmani river when the country-boat in which they were ferrying capsized midstream, about 35 km from here on Monday, police said.

"Nine persons including the girl identified as Soma Pati of Panchupada village under Motonga police station were sailing in the overcrowded boat when it capsized," Superintendent of Police S K Gajvayee said.

They had boarded the small boat at Saanda ghat under Parjang police station and were to reach Bangursing ghat under Odapada police station when mishap struck.

"The small boat was overcrowded ferrying nine persons against its capacity of four", the SP said.

Search operation was on to trace the girl in the swirling river, he said.
