Bhubaneswar: It seems dynasty politics in Odisha was outrightly rejected by voters in the recently concluded general elections as they gave thumbs down to many duos of political families who were in the poll fray.
While Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik faced defeat from Ghasipura and Bhandaripokhari assembly constituencies, his son Nabajyoti Patnaik lost from the Balasore Lok Sabha seat. Another Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das faced similar fate as he lost from the Kalahandi Lok Sabha whereas his son Sagar Charan Das faced defeat from the Bhawanipatna Assembly constituency.
Responding to the results, Patnaik said, “Multiple members of the same family involve in politics and it is not a new thing.”
In his reaction, Bhakta Charan said, “The past MLAs of Kalahandi whom I groomed, betrayed me. It was time for me to introduce my son to safeguard interest of Kalahandi.”
In Bhadrak Parliamentary seat, Madhumita Sethi, daughter of senior Congress leader Ananta Charan Sethi lost the election whereas he himself suffered defeat from Simulia Assembly segment.
BJD candidate from Sundergarh Lok Sabha seat, Sunita Biswal and her sister and Congress candidate Amita Biswal also failed to win the voters’ confidence. Moreover, royal scions Kalikesh Singh Deo and Arkesh Singh Deo, sons of BJD heavyweight AU Singh Deo, who were in the poll battle, faced defeat.
“Whether my family remains in power or not, we will continue to serve the people of Bolangir,” said Kalikesh Narayan.
Similarly, senior BJP leader Damodar Rout lost the Balikuda-Erasama assembly seat while his son Sambit Routray won from the Paradip Assembly constituency.
On the other hand, success rate in some political families was 100 per cent. While BJD leader Manohar Randhari was re-elected from Dabugaon Assembly seat, his sister Padmini Dian registered victory from Kotpad Assembly segment.
Similarly, BJD leader Ramesh Majhi and brother Prakash Majhi also registered victory in their respective constituencies.
In western Odisha, senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra won the Bolangir Assembly segment whereas his son Samarendra lost in the Parliamentary constituency to Sangeeta Singh Deo. However, her husband and BJP leader KV Singh Deo lost the polls in Patnagarh Assembly constituency.
Though Congress leader Suresh Routray won from Jatni Assembly seat, his son-in-law Prasad Harichandan faced the defeat.
While Rishabh Nanda, son of BJD leader Prashant Nanda, lost from Begunia Assembly seat, sons of Bijayashree Routray, Pravat Tripathy and Prabhat Biswal have tasted success.
Political pundits opined that the people of the State have not accepted power-greedy politicians and therefore there is a change in the choice of voters.
“People could not digest the greed of politicians and the same is evident from the result,” said a political expert, Rabi Das.
