Berhampur: Suspecting presence of Maoists from Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh, combing operations were intensified in Orissa`s Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts. We have launched combing operation for the last several days and will continue for some more days, Kandhamal superintendent of police J N Pankaj said.

Vehicles were being checked in the border areas of the district and night patrolling intensified, he said. The elite COBRA force, CRPF, India Reserve Battalion, Special Operation Group and local police forces were deployed in the operation to flash out the rebels from the areas, police said adding attention has been paid to vulnerable areas.

The Maoists were suspected to be camping in the three districts as offensive had been launched in the two states against them and were suspected to be planning a major offensive in some areas of Orissa, the police said. The security forces had unearthed a huge quantity of explosives from Gudibali chhaka on the national highway at Daringbadi in Kandhamal district and destroyed a Maoist camp in Gajapati district recently.
