Berhampur: Members of Ganjam District Sugarcane Growers' Association have urged Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to declare a special package for sugarcane growers and revival of Aska Cooperative Sugar Industry Limited (ACSIL), the oldest sugar factory in the state.
 
The sugar industry and sugarcane growers suffered huge damage due to cyclone Phailin and subsequent flood in the district last month.
 
While ACSIL estimating the loss at about Rs 9 crore, sugarcane was damaged in around 8000 hectare area affecting the livelihood of about 10,000 farmers in 17 out of 22 blocks in the district, they said.
 
Association president and former MP from Aska D K Panda, several MLAs of the district and Rajya Sabha member Renubala Pradhan along with several members of the association met the chief minister at Bhubaneswar.
 
State?s Cooperative and Rural Development minister Bikram Arukha was also present during the discussion.
 
"The chief minister assured us that necessary steps will be taken for the sugar sector," Samira Pradhan, general secretary of the association, said.
