Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday decided to appoint block education officers (BEOs) in all 314 Blocks of the state. This was informed by School and Mass Education Minister Ravi Narayan Nanda in Assembly.

Informing the House that the appointment process for the above posts was on, Nanda said that recently he had personally met all the to-be appointed 74 officers and discussed on various issues with them.

Meanwhile, legislators cutting across party lines lamented degradation in the education system in many places of the state. They argued that the district inspectors (DIs) in some places are over-burdened with additional responsibilities, thus drastically hampering their routine inspections.

The session looked serious on Thursday when some elected representatives voiced concern on the continuing abysmal performance of the Indian Administrative Service aspirants from the state. They demanded special syllabus and coaching centres in all varsities to attract students for the prestigious service.

In reply, Higher Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra stated attractive high salary packages were working as driving force for which the students these days prefer to take up technical courses. The minister however assured the legislators that a committee would look into their suggestion.
