Bhubaneswar: Hours after the State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule for the ensuing three-tire panchayat polls, the winter session of the Odisha Assembly was today adjourned sine die even as opposition Congress walked out of the House in protest.

"It was decided to curtail the assembly session in order to enable the MLAs of all parties to go to their constituencies for the panchayat polls," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters outside the assembly after Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat announced early adjournment of the House. The winter session of the assembly which began on December 9 was scheduled to continue till December 31.

However, the House was adjourned six days in advance. While the government chief whip Rabi Narayan Pani moved a motion proposing adjournment of the House, Congress members opposed it. The Congress members led by the leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh walked out of the assembly in protest accusing the state government of fearing to face the house.
