Khurda: Despite taking several anti-poaching measures to check birds killing, the wild life department on yesterday arrested two poachers and seized 16 dead migratory birds from them at Chilika lake near here. The poacher duo was forwarded to court, officials said.
 
On a tip-off, Tangi wild life officials conducted raid at Subhadrapur inside the lake and nabbed the duo with the carcass of winged creatures. The poachers killed the birds by laying a trap in the largest brackish water lagoon, wild life officials said. Nine large whistling teals, five shovellers and two pintail were among the dead birds, they added.
 
According to sources poachers target winged guests of Chilika since the birds started arriving in the lake from different countries as the meat of migratory birds has a high demand in the local areas. In view of this, forest officials have kept a strict vigil on the activities of the bird killers.
