Rourkela: A 22-year-old youth drowned in Sankh River at Bhalupatra under Brahmanitarang police limits in the Steel City on Sunday. This is the seventh death from drowning in the area this picnic season.

The deceased has been identified as Chandan Mahakud. He along with four others was bathing in the river when the mishap occurred.

As per initial reports, the five youths went deep into the water while taking bath in the river. While four of them were rescued immediately by the locals and fire fighters, Mahakud was traced after a thorough search.

He was rushed to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) where the doctors declared him as brought dead.

Bayes Kujur, the Fire officer of Rourkela Fire Station said, "When we reached the spot, four persons were already rescued by the locals and Mahakud was still missing. We launched a search operation and fished him out."

The four others rescued from the river are stated to be out of danger and they have already been discharged from the hospital after preliminary treatment.

It is pertinent to mention here that three rivers; Sankh, Koel and Brahmani flow through Rourkela making it a popular picnic spots for tourists. However, a spurt in drowning deaths in recent months has triggered concern among the locals. They demanded safety of tourists and expressed disappointment over lack of signage near danger zones.
