Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government and the State Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services directed all the pet shops, dog breeding facilities, and veterinary cares to mandatorily register with the State Animal Welfare Board.

An official notification in this regard was issued by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services on Thursday.

As per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and Marketing) Rules 2017 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules 2018, no one can operate a pet shop or carry on the business of breeding and trade pet animals without being certified under the State Animal Welfare Board, read the official notification.

Strict action will be taken as per the concerned law, if any pet shop, breeding, and veterinary centres were found flouting the norms, added the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in the letter.

The decision was taken after complaints regarding the abandonment of pet animals and closure of pet shops with the animals inside were reported from several parts of the State amid the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown.

The pet shop owners, breeding, and veterinary facilities can visit the concerned District Chief Veterinary Officer (CDVO) for registration purposes. The registration form and details regarding the registration process can be availed at the official website of Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Department- www.fardodisha.gov.in and Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Husbandry- www.odishaahvs.nic.in.
